TWA Connie
We moved this Constellation (Connie) from the Auburn Lewiston Municipal Airport in Auburn ME in 2018. This was a very unique aircraft relocation for us. The weather in Maine was typical of Maine weather with some nice days and even days with snow. Overall the disassembly phase went great. As we were preparing the aircraft for its journey south to New York City our customer made contact with the city mayor and found a way for us to make brief stop in Time Square. Now our logistical team had to find a way to bring an over sized load into Time Square.
Due to conflicts with routes and planning we decided to park the Connie at JFK for a short period of time so we could get a better plan. After about 3 weeks the plan was in place and away we went. In the early morning hours we made our way into time square with the assistance of over 60 NYPD motorcycle police officers. Once we were parked we sat for 3 days on display.
After our brief and hectic stay in time square we made our way to the final spot at the TWA hotel at JFK where the real work began. After snaking our way under the iconic tunnelsĀ (where the movie catch me if you can was filmed) we craned the aircraft up to its final resting spot where we started the reassembly process. Now normally we would have our equipment for lifting the wings, but due to the final spot being above of conference hall, we could not add more weight than needed.
After a multi day reassembly the aircraft was carefully reassembled and is now on display. The cool part about this project is that you can actually go out to the aircraft and have drinks and snacks inside. All in all this was a logistical nightmare but we made it happen as always.
